Dam Square in Amsterdam

Dam Square in Amsterdam

November 2004: It amazes me sometimes how the American people are shown different things than the rest of the world.

For instance, when I was recently in Amsterdam, the Dutch filmmaker Theo Van Gogh, the great grandson of his namesake (who was the brother of Vincent Van Gogh), was brutally shot and stabbed while riding a bike in the streets in the early morning, a day before I left.

As a result, over 20,000 people amassed in Dam Square outside the hotel where we stayed. It was widely covered in Europe and Scandinavia, but only briefy mentioned at home in the US.

It makes you wonder if that car chase is as important as they make it sound.
