YKS Adjustable Beam Focus LED Headlamp - Gear Review - A view with a zoom

The YKS Adjustable Beam Focus LED Headlamp Disclaimer: I was contacted by an extremely pleasant representative of YKS, a manufacturer in China, asking if I would review one of their products. The item, the YKS Adjustable Beam Focus LED Headlamp reviewed in this article, was listed on Amazon and had good reviews. I said, “Sure” and shortly received the free headlamp with the understanding that I would review it. Many links in this article are Amazon affiliate links. What follows is my honest review of the YKS Adjustable Beam Focus LED Headlamp.

I received the YKS Adjustable Beam Focus LED Headlamp in the mail and my first impression was, this thing is LONG! The lens of the headlamp does extend out a bit more than my other headlamps, but, in the field, I didn't even notice it.

The zoom capability

I decided to take it out for an overnight backpacking trip to see how well it did. Since we left a little later than anticipated, I had to switch the headlamp on about 20 minutes into our hike. I was able to change how wide or narrow the beam was by pulling or pushing on the lens. Similar to every other lens ever created, when I pushed in, the lens was wide, and when I pulled out, the light narrowed to a point so sharp, that I could actually see the shape of the circuit board.

Zoomed out all the way

Zoomed in all the way

I was skeptical of such an affordable headlamp, but it felt really well built, and as I was hiking toward our campsite and setting up my tent, I forgot that I was wearing something new.

As we bushwhacked around, making sure we were on the right trail, I was able to spot a scorpion between the chapparal.

One minor complaint: It cycles through the lighting modes every time you use it, including a strobe. When I am out in the wilderness, the last thing I want to do, unless there is an emergency, is to draw attention to myself. I found myself covering the lens when turning off. If there were other backpackers around, it would likely be annoying to see flashing lights from time to time.

I've had other headlamps do this, so it's not that unusual. But I find myself drawn to headlamps that don't cycle every time.

Summary As of right now, this headlamp is $14.99 on Amazon, with Prime shipping. If you are looking for an inexpensive headlamp that does what it needs to do, I can find no major fault in this one, just the minor cycling issue.
