Mount Woodson Hike (Potato Chip Rock, Poway) – Peak #5

Mount Woodson Hike (Potato Chip Rock, Poway) – Peak #5

Mount Woodson is one of the most popular hikes in San Diego County, best known for the iconic Potato Chip Rock formation near its summit. Located in Poway, this well-traveled trail features a steady climb, unique rock formations, and panoramic views that draw hikers year-round. It served as Peak #5 in my San Diego 100 Peaks Challenge.

07/28/2009
The first time I hiked it for the blog in 2009, I had a limited view due to haze, but I sure enjoyed it. I heard plenty of rattlesnakes in the brush and saw 4 turkey vultures overhead. I only saw one other party on the trail. Times have changed since getting a photo of yourself on the iconic Potato Chip Rock has become a popular reason to hike to the top.

On busier days, there is often a line of people waiting to take photos on Potato Chip Rock. The good news is that it’s customary to hand your phone to the group behind you so they can take your group’s picture. It’s customary to offer to do the same to the group ahead of you.

I hiked this hike several times before I heard about Potato Chip Rock. I still haven’t been on that particular feature, opting to visit the high point of Woodson Mountain.

Update March 18, 2026 - New Trailhead Parking Lot
On March 18, 2026, a new trailhead parking lot was opened off of the highway. Previously, the weekend traffic on this trail would cause the highway on the east side of the mountain to be lined with cars. Now, a short drive through the gate brings you to a large parking lot, with pit toilets and accessible parking spaces. The trailhead link above will take you to the entrance to the lot off the highway.

From the Ramona side, this is a simple power hike on a paved trail. From Lake Poway, it’s a nice trail up the hillside. I’ve been on both and each way has its merits.

On my first hike up in 2006, it was with family and it was after a rain. The view was amazing and we could see the Catalina Islands. That’s the large photo at the top of the post. I felt like I could reach out and touch Lake Hodges.
