I remember reading an early copy of The Worst-Case Scenario Survival Handbook: Expert Advice for Extreme Situations years ago. I received it as a gift and was delighted by the humorous tone as the author delved into potentially life-threatening scenarios.

Around in one form or another since 1999, the edition I recently received from the publisher is updated with a lot of new strategies for survival. Notably Chapter Five: Technical Trouble.

With sections labeled, How to Survive a Flaming Cell Phone and How to Survive if your Smart Home Outsmarts You, there is plenty to laugh about, and plenty to learn.

While every scenario won’t be able to be used in my outdoor adventures, there are some that are pretty applicable.

For instance, Chapter Two: Tooth and Claw contains a ton of useful techniques when it comes to animal encounters. While I think I know what to do in these situations, it’s great to read these and brush up on preferred methods.

Chapter Seven: Adventure Survival contains the most relevant information for hiking in San Diego. Topics on desert and mountain survival, as well as making fire and purifying water are all very useful for the outdoors.

Overall, it’s a very entertaining read, mixing whimsical content that you’ll likely never use with some serious means of surviving real situations. While you may not remember everything, hopefully you’ll remember it when it counts.

My daughter really liked reading it on a recent camping trip. She and her friend read it for hours, laughing at the silly scenarios.

It’s a nice gift for that adventurer in your life. That may even be you.
